“Hey!” she called out from her spot on her towel. “Nick!” She waved towards the curly-haired boy she had just seen stumbling out from the waves after what seemed like a magnificently painful wipeout.
He smiled awkwardly, waving back and made his way over to her. She raised her eyebrows at the wet suit.
“Most people on this beach surf with just board shorts,” she teased, turning herself fully towards him.
He laughed lightly. “Yeah…I know.”
An awkward silence ensued. She hadn’t spoken to him in what felt like the longest time, and now, here they were, alone.
“I-” she started.
“I miss you,” he blurted out, cutting across her.
She paused, reaching up a trembling hand to move away the strands of hair that had fluttered across her face.
“I miss you,” he said again, looking miserable and embarrassed. ”A lot.” He took a deep breath. “And I’m sorry, you know. For everything.”
